In the UK, it is reported that 1.2 million women and 700,000 men experience domestic violence each year. This correlates with the reports that domestic violence has estimated overall cost to mental healthcare of £176 million.
This week, it is Mental Health Awareness Week and here at Hope After Harm, we want to raise awareness of the mental health impacts upon victims of sexual violence and domestic abuse.
Key statistics:
- 30-60% of women with mental health problems have experienced domestic violence.
- Over 50% of high-risk victims report having mental health issues
- As many as two-thirds of victims of abuse (64%) developed PTSD in one study
- 7% of victims report that they have considered or attempted suicide as a result of the abuse, and 17% report self-harming.
- It is estimated that 1 in 8 women take their own lives as a result of domestic abuse.
- Every day almost 30 women attempt suicide as a result of experiencing domestic abuse.
- Every week, three women take their own lives as a result of experiencing domestic abuse.
